Norwegian trainer Rune Haugen relishing Newbury test for stable star Quarterback this Saturday

Newbury's Flat racing season draws to a close this Saturday, October 22, with the Worthington's Armed Forces Raceday.

The seven-race programme runs from 1.45pm to 5.05pm and features two Group Three contests.

The richest race of the day is the £60,000 G3 Worthington's OCSL Stakes (2.20pm, 26 entries), staged over a mile and a half.

Among the possible starters in the Worthington's OCSL Stakes is Kings Fete (Sir Michael Stoute), a dual G3 scorer this season including victory in the Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes over a furlong and a half further at Newbury in August.

Another two-time G3 winner among the entries is Quarterback, who is trained in Norway by Rune Haugen.

The four-year-old American Post colt was successful by five lengths on his latest start in the G3 Stockholm Cup International over 12 furlongs at Bro Park in Sweden on September 11, adding to his earlier G3 victory in the Scandinavian Open Championship, also staged over 12 furlongs, at Klampenborg, Denmark on August 6.

Quarterback has made two appearances so far in the UK, faring best when runner-up in the Listed James Seymour Stakes at Newmarket in October, 2015.

Haugen, who is based at Drammen in the Fjord region of Norway, commented today: "Quarterback will be running at Newbury on Saturday and Jamie Spencer will ride. He will be travelling over tomorrow and should arrive at Newbury in the late afternoon.

"I have trained some very good horses over the years but it looks like with Quarterback that I have an international star.

"I have run him in six different countries in the last nine months so he is a real globetrotter. He started off his international campaign in Qatar in December, when Jamie Spencer rode him. The trip was only nine furlongs there which was a bit short for him.

"Saturday's race is over a mile and a half and I think Newbury will suit him perfectly as he is a really big galloping horse.

"The ground doesn't seem to matter to him. He ran a cracking race on fast ground in Dubai and won in Stockholm on good ground while he was second at Newmarket last year on soft ground.

"My horse has won two of his last three starts, both of which have come at G3 level. You can forget his run in between at Ovrevoll (Norway) as it was only nine furlongs and everything went wrong for him that day. His win at Stockholm last time came in a very fast time and he beat some good horses.

"He is still improving and I think he can make the frame at Newbury on Saturday. I have had one runner at Newbury before, Miyasaki, who was third in a Listed race in 2007."

Other contenders for the OCSL Worthington's Stakes are Western Hymn (John Gosden), a G2 winner who was third in the G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. His trainer could also be represented by the improving fillies Lady Of Camelot and The Black Princess.

Koora (Luca Cumani) won this race 12 months ago, while there are two Irish-trained contenders - G1 Irish Derby third Stellar Mass (Jim Bolger) and Almela (Dermot Weld), a G2 runner-up at Chantilly on October 1.

Baydar (Hugo Palmer) landed the very valuable Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury on September 17 and could make his first start over 12 furlongs and in Pattern company, while Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has three entries - Elite Army, Memorial Day and Prize Money.

The action gets underway on Worthington's Armed Forces Raceday at 1.45pm with the £40,000 Worthington's Alzheimers Society Stakes, staged over seven furlongs for two-year-old.

The 23 entries for this contest include Sea Fox (David Evans) and Silver Line (Saeed bin Suroor) who have been placed at G2 level, plus Listed winners Rodaini (Simon Crisford) and Sir Dancealot (David Elsworth).

Other highlights on Saturday are the £30,000 Listed JLT Stakes (3.20pm, 23 entries) and the £20,000 Bathwick Tyres Handicap (2.50pm, 30 entries).

Racegoers can look forward to a fun family day out in honour of the UK Armed Forces complete with plenty of military themed entertainment.

A magnificent Chinook helicopter will deliver the ceremonial poppy for the launch of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal for Berkshire & The Vale of White Horse, with static helicopters and military vehicles also on display during the afternoon.

The Royal Logistics Corps band will accompany a sing-along after racing to round off a spectacular end to Newbury's 2016 Flat season.

Newbury also races on Friday, October 21, with a seven-race card running from 1.50pm to 5.20pm.

Newbury Racecourse

Newbury Racecourse held its first race in 1905 and has long been one of Britain's leading tracks, staging up to 30 days of top class Jump and Flat racing annually, with at least one raceday in every month of the year.

The highlight of Newbury's Jump racing programme is the Hennessy Gold Cup, a handicap chase over an extended three and a quarter miles, which usually takes place in late November, and is the longest-running commercial sporting sponsorship in the world. With a prize fund of £200,000, 'The Hennessy' is one of the most prestigious and sought after prizes in the sport and is the focal point of the bet365 Festival. The 2014 winner Many Clouds went on to win the 2015 Grand National at Aintree while in 2015 the grey Smad Place was a popular winner.

On the Flat, Newbury's high-quality programme includes the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes in May, with the Group One race over a mile worth £350,000. It has been won by many of the greats of the sport, including Frankel in 2012.

The racecourse is also a thriving events venue, hosting a huge range of activities including weddings, concerts, and conferences for 20 to 1,000 attendees for a wide spectrum of businesses and organisations in stunning surroundings. In addition, it runs a successful private nursery, providing a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment for many pre-school children.

Newbury is now home to a major housing development by David Wilson Homes, allowing people to live in a unique location alongside a world-renowned sporting venue, which also benefits from a Nuffield Health Club. The racecourse now has its own 36-bedroom hotel, The Lodge, which opened in June, 2016.

As of August, 2016, the Racecourse began its £20 million 'heartspace' redevelopment which will take around 18 months in total to complete. The project will see a brand new Owners & Trainers Facility and Eastern Entrance as well as a re-modelled pre-parade ring and enlarged parade ring and winner's enclosure with enhanced viewing for racegoers. There will also be a new unsaddling/wash down area for unplaced horses and re-landscaping of the area around the parade ring.
